Biblical Single Moms You Should Know About

Reading the bible is very daunting at first.

However, I have found, the more I read the more I am interested. The more I'm interested, the more I want to dig beyond the surface level scriptures.

Don't get me wrong, scripture is scripture - whether read for the first time or millionth. But there are so many hidden gems and stories that we just won't know if we dig.

For instance if you dive into 1 Kings, you will find an experience of a single mom and her son who were in need. She was helpless and hopeless. Yet, when she encountered a true prophet from the Lord, she was saved from her wish from dying.

For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’
1 Kings 17:14

Or a chapter over, you dive into 2 Kings, you will find the story of another single mom who encountered the same prophet of God, and her supply in her house ran over to pay her bills and to live on the rest of what God had supplied for them.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”
2 Kings 4:7

Or maybe the sad story of Hagar in Genesis - the one who was put into an uncomfortable situation only for her child's father to dismiss her and her son. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael, the son that was not promised to Abraham, and she was told to eventually leave so the real promised son would not have grievance.

“What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
Genesis 8: 17-18

God is faithful, wherever you are in single motherhood.

These are just examples of extraordinary women in the bible who overcame problems dealing with single motherhood. Like Naomi who had an amazing daughter in law (Ruth) to help her through with surviving losing her husband, in the end providing for her in the end. Or even the woman at the well, where the bible didn't specify she was a single mom, but she had a a terrible past with men but Jesus didn't cast her away.

I encourage you to take time to read their amazing stories and notice they are no different than ours in 2022. But also notice that God has always made a way, His way. God is our Healer, our Provider, our Protection, our Peace, our Way Maker.. and so many more attributes. God doesn't look down on us because we are single moms. He shows up faithfully, every time in every need.
