But God, I Didn’t Sow This!

I found myself in a season where situations were popping up left and right in my life – things I know I plant. After a huge scare about three months ago that had me shook to my core, I was asking God “What did I do to reap this this type of havoc? And why is everything happening to me?

I was at a very low point. One of the ministers at my church checked on me during this time of crisis. I said to her, “I know I didn’t do anything this bad in my life to cause this. Why is all of this happening to me?”

And I will never forget her words to me:

“It’s not what we have done, sometimes, it’s just the enemy is fighting us.”

And I couldn’t for the life of me understand, why would the enemy want to fight me? I was surely trying to live a life pleasing to God – so I know I wasn’t really bothering anyone. Most times I kept to myself – and just let my life teach more than what my mouth could. But God showed me, even not bothering anyone, I was certainly bothering the devil.

Then, God brought to my remembrance what God told satan about Job:

8 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.” (Job 1:8)

Following that, God led me to the scripture of the conversation between Jesus and Simon Peter:

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail.”  (Luke 22:31-32a)

I asked God, “Well since you showed me this, and it is nothing that I have done – why does satan want me?”

The Lord replied, “Satan wants those that I know won’t fall to his schemes. Just think of me as a proud papa watching from the stands of your life. I have bragged on you and I know you won’t let Me down. I know you will pass every test brought your way. I know you will do it My way, even though you may not want to. I know that you won’t let Me down. For my real servants, I asked satan if he considered all of you. He told me that if havoc comes in your life, that you will fall. I had to prove him wrong. ”

This frightens me, but also allows me to see how God sees me! God told satan – I’ll let you fight Amber (within my parameters) – but she’s a good servant and won’t let Me down!

Sometimes it’s not what we’re reaping, it’s the enemy putting up a fight with us that God, clearly, allows. I had to realize, havoc didn’t escape Job’s life because he was a great man of God – it actually came because he was a great man of God. We can sow on good ground (doing what is righteous and right) and still weeds will come in our life because of what the enemy tries to sow to get us off of God’s track.

Let’s look in Matthew 13: 24-30 and the parable of the wheat vs. weeds.

In the story, workers planted on good ground but when they slept, the enemy came and snuck weeds among what they planted. When they realized weeds were growing, the farmer said let the weeds and wheat grow out until harvest season. The wheat (good plantings) will be savored and the weeds (the enemy’s plantings) will be destroyed.

To me, it says:

The enemy will come and plant things in your life – nothing at all you planted. But, as good people, we have to allow the harvest (what you planted and what the devil planted) to mature enough until the season of reaping. So do not prematurely cut out (or try to fight) what the enemy is doing. In harvest (reaping) season, the seeds planted on good ground will be kept and stored away, and the havoc will be burned and destroyed.

Take heart, as I am – that everything happening in your life is not what you necessarily planted. The devil considered you for his plantings, but so has God! In due season, you will reap on the good ground you sown and everything else will be destroyed!
